Hansa Heavy Lift closes in on newbuild spree

Shanghai: German-headquarted Hansa Heavy Lift is close to signing for up to six ships, most likely in China. The company, founded in 2011 with Oaktree Capital Management following the demise of Beluga, has grown rapidly from its initial 16-ship fleet to 24 today. Managing director Joerg Roehl, attending this week’s Breakbulk China event in Shanghai, told SinoShip News the line was looking to grow its fleet to 30 by the middle of next year.

“We are constantly looking for attractive deals in the market,” Roehl said, adding: “We currently have a newbuild plan, there’s no confirmed orders yet but we are now talking to shipyards, particularly in China.”

On the China market, Roehl said: “China is very important for us and of course the most competitive market, with the competition from the home carriers in China.”
