Harris CapRock: Cyber attacks will cost industry billions of dollars

Houston: Tracey Halsam, president of American comms firm Harris CapRock, estimates cyber attacks against oil and gas infrastructure will cost close to $1.9bn by 2018.

“As threats loom in the distance, security is a major hurdle that companies need to proactively address,” she says.

Computer system invaders attacked 43% of global mining, oil and gas companies at least once last year. One unique item for oil and gas that complicates things further is that systems are networked in remote locations where IT staff is limited.

Shipping also faces similar problems, especially as technology becomes more sophisticated in the industry.

“As systems become more automated and the need for human intervention continues to decline, the risks will continue to grow,” Halsam says.

While she admits no system is impenetrable, Halsam says her company’s product, SafePass Pro defends against malicious intent by offering comprehensive approaches via content filtering, threat monitoring and management as well as advanced cyber protection services. The goal, she says, is to defend, monitor, and prevent cybersecurity attacks.
