Havfram Wind scores Hornsea 3 contract for WTIV newbuild

Norwegian installation contractor Havfram Wind has won a contract from Denmark’s Ørsted to install turbines at its Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK.

The project starts in autumn 2026 and will utilise the company’s wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) under construction at CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China.

Hornsea 3 will consist of up to 231 offshore wind turbines, located within a 696 sq km area, some 120 km off the Norfolk coast and 160 km off the Yorkshire coast. The wind farm will have a capacity of 2,852 MW, capable of producing enough electricity to power over 3m UK homes.

“We are confident that we have not only the right assets but also the team to fulfill such a large construction job. Hornsea 3 represents an important contribution to the rapidly growing renewable energy capacity in UK, the largest energy market in Europe. Becoming a main installation contractor for this project, is an important milestone for us as a company and of great importance for our growth,” said Martin Degen, commercial director and vice president of Havfram Wind.

Last year, US private investment firm Sandbrook Capital took over Havfram and committed $500m in equity capital to build a fleet of offshore wind service vessels. The start of construction on the next-generation WTIV, capable of handling 20 MW turbines and larger, was announced in December last year.
