Haze brings dangers to ships calling Port Klang

Kuala Lumpur: Harbour pilots yesterday called on the Port Klang Authority (PKA) to add security measures due to poor visibility of less than 100 m caused by the haze from the fires in neighbouring Indonesia.

Malaysia Harbour Pilots Association (MHAPA) president Captain Mahadhir Che Ismail said PKA had not issued any instructions to close the port so far despite harbour pilots having had to rely entirely on radar to navigate ships into the harbour at one point.

Other ports around the world will often shut down operations when visibility dips below 500 m.

For the last couple of days Port Klang has had the worst pollution readings in Malaysia from the regional haze.

"With about 150 ships entering and exiting Port Klang a day, the haze increases the collision risk and threatens the safety of all the ships," Ismail told local media.  [27/06/13]
