Haze thickens around Sumatra

Jakarta: Authorities are warning ships travelling through Indonesia need to be highly vigilant as severe haze envelopes large parts of Sumatra.

The extreme pollution of the past fortnight has seen some ports in the area take extreme measures to ensure safety.

At Palembang port, for instance, odd dates are assigned for outgoing vessels and even dates for incoming vessels.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 170 hot spots in South Sumatra on Monday, which was the highest number in Sumatra. Dense haze from forest fires in the province has spread to Jambi, Lampung, Riau, West Sumatra, Aceh and North Sumatra. [14/10/14]
