Hijacked barge found off Sabah

An Indonesian barge, Anand 12, hijacked by the militant group Abu Sayyaf late last month in the far south of the Philippines, has been found in Malaysian waters off Sabah. The 10-strong crew of the tug towing the barge remain held hostage however with Indonesian and Philippine authorities still negotiating their release.

Abu Sayyaf, which has since been linked to another hijacking in the same region, is thought to be seeking a $1m ransom for the crew’s release.

The barge has been taken to a nearby port and forensic experts are now on the scene.
