HK firm launches onboard social media portal

Hong Kong: Hong Kong’s SMSGlobal, a provider of personal communications, has announced the launch of Se@MeNow, a maritime social networking portal where seafarers can stay in touch with their loved ones through social walls, photo sharing, video and voice chat and web mail. In addition, users can shop with worldwide delivery, play online games and follow live updates on their favorite sports events.

3,200 deep sea vessels are currently equipped with SMSGlobal’s CrewCommCenter system – having 125,000 seafarers exchanging 2,250,000 messages monthly with over 1,300,000 friends and loved ones on-shore.

Se@MeNow functions as the web mail service for all of SMSGlobal’s subscribers using the CrewCommCenter system.
“Social networking has become one of the most important parts of our daily life. With internet connectivity becoming more prevalent on-board merchant vessels, a clear trend in communication is access to social networking sites and online chat. These ways of keeping contact with home adds significant value to the onboard communication services,” said Jan Andre Heggem, managing director of SMSGlobal.

SMSGlobal was founded in 2003 when the company introduced the first universal 2-way SMS text messaging and crew email service for seafarers.  [21/02/14]
