HK ruling forces CMA CGM to shell out $2.3m compensation

Hong Kong: Captain Igal Dafni, a well known name in Hong Kong shipping circles, has been awarded a big windfall following a lengthy court battle. A Hong Kong court ordered French containerline, CMA CGM, to pay Dafni $2.3m plus interest, for an unfair dismissal six years years ago.

Dafni headed up CNC Line, a Taiwanese intra-Asia operator controlled by CMA CGM, at the time of his dismissal.

“The sacking was dressed up as a resignation as Saade considered that this was better for the defendant’s reputation, and also the plaintiff’s. The plaintiff took the fig leaf as he had no other choice,” the court’s recorder wrote in handing out the verdict, referring to Dafni and the head of CMA CGM, Jacques Saade.  [11/02/14]
