Hong Kong Maritime Hub: Back on the map

A new website has just launched covering all things Hong Kong maritime.

Created by veteran shipping journalist Mike Grinter, Hong Kong Maritime Hub aims to cover every facet of the Special Administrative Region’s diverse shipping scene.

It comes at a time too when there is a renewed push by the authorities in Hong Kong to push the city as a place to set up shipping businesses, as witnessed most recently by the solid showing of Hong Kong, Inc at Posidonia in Athens.

“Hong Kong definitely has to compete in terms of visibility and perception if it is to achieve its aspirations as a premier hub,” Grinter tells Maritime CEO.

Hong Kong cannot continue to promote itself simply on what Grinter describes as “the legend” of a low tax regime, rule of law, freedom of information and geographical proximity to markets.

While these are important attributes, other jurisdictions can boast similar advantages.

Instead, Grinter suggests Hong Kong should identify its experts, innovators and leaders, and its best practices in order to reveal its true potential.

Grinter, a British national who this December will celebrate 25 years in Hong Kong, is also the publisher of Asia Maritime magazine. His background includes stints at a P&I club, and shipping titles Fairplay and Lloyd’s List.

Of the new site, Grinter says: “We are growing a bank of information on Hong Kong and the various maritime-related industries quickly becoming a comprehensive and reliable source of data for those operating in Hong Kong and others who wish to do business with Hong Kong or set up here.”
