Huadong Shipyard suspends operations due to violent incident

Guangzhou: Fujian Huadong Shipyard has temporarily suspended operations as nearly 200 outraged local aquaculture farmers smashed the office building and parts of the shipbuilding facilities in the shipyard.

The farmers believe the shipyard has polluted the neighboring seashore, which has caused massive losses for them.

An official from the shipyard claimed that the shipyard hasn’t received newbuild orders for the past few years due to the depressed shipbuilding market, and it is focusing on the ship repair business, which creates little pollution to the local environment.

The local government later announced that it has started an environmental investigation on pollution from the shipyard, and the result showed that the pollution discharge level of the shipyard hasn’t exceeded the standard. [22/09/14]
