IACS: Class body must be more proactive

Paris: Into his final month as chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), Philippe Donche-Gay has had time to ruminate on the class body, its mission and how it could improve. The executive vice president and head of the marine & offshore division at Bureau Veritas took on the rolling one-year chairmanship of IACS last July.

“Given the constraints of being an association with 12 members we could be more proactive in our role to be the technical adviser to IMO,” Donche-Gay tells Maritime CEO. He says it is vital for IACS to continue to position class alongside the technologies of the future.

Under his watch IACS has initiated two key pieces of work: LNG bunkering guidelines and software-related research, something increasingly vital with growing cyber security threats.

ABS takes on the IACS chairmanship next month.
