Indian consulate warns on rise of stranded seafarers

Dubai: Such is the frequency with which the Indian consulate is having to deal with stranded seafarers in UAE waters that it has spoken out to local media on the issue, providing advice to seafarers before they sign contracts to work on ships.

The consulate has had to handle the repatriation of nearly 100 crew from 13 stranded ships since July alone as owners ditch assets in the downturn.

The consulate has told seafarers to run proper background checks on shipping firms and agencies before signing up.  [08/12/14]
