Iran container calls dwindle

Dubai: Ahead of new US sanctions due in July major containerlines are increasingly shunning calls at Iran to the point whereby the country will become very reliant on feeder services from the UAE and other neighbours in the future.

Kuwait’s United Arab Shipping Co (UASC) is among the latest to suspend all Iran calls.

Dubai-based Simatech Shipping said this month it would also cut services to and from Iran from June because of the new sanctions.

Hong Kong-headquartered Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) told Reuters its feeder service to Iran from the UAE would cease from June after ending direct business from Asia two years ago. Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines is also ditching Iran calls.  Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and Hapag Lloyd all cancelled Iran port calls last year.  [08/05/13]
