Italian port workers to strike over self-handling

Workers are planning a strike on May 11, shutting down all Italian ports for the day, citing a need to improve safety.

The strike is focusing on self-handling, where a ship’s crew loads or lashes cargo, which the unions says has caused three fatal accidents at Italian ports this year.

“Lashing is dockwork and abuses must be sanctioned,” the dockers’ section of the European Transport Workers’ Federation said on its Twitter account over the weekend.
