Japanese-owned bulker detained in Seattle for safety violations

The US Coast Guard (USCG) on Monday detained a Japanese bulk carrier in Seattle for alleged safety violations regarding firefighting equipment.

The Panama-flagged 2010-built Lowlands Kamsar was conducting operations in Seattle when USCG performed a port state control inspection.

Inspectors found that the fire-extinguishing system in the engine room of the 751-foot vessel had been deliberately disabled.

The ship, which is owned by Misuga of Japan, will be held until the safety breach is fixed, said USCG.
