JERA snaps up Belgian offshore wind developer Parkwind

Japan’s largest utility JERA has agreed to buy Belgian offshore wind developer Parkwind from Virya Energy for €1.55bn ($1.7bn).

Parkwind is the largest offshore wind platform in Belgium with four offshore wind projects in the country totalling 771 MW and is constructing the 257 MW Arcardis Ost project in Germany. The company also has a 4.5 GW pipeline of projects in Europe and beyond.

Closing of the transaction is expected later this year. In addition, JERA and Virya will explore the possibility of Virya to re-invest in a minority stake in Parkwind’s Belgian wind farms and discuss collaboration on future opportunities within Belgium.

JERA has a portfolio of over 2 GW of operating renewables capacity with offshore wind project investments in the UK, Taiwan and developments in Japan.
