As an Assistant Dockmaster, you will be part of the team that ensures vessels arrive and depart successfully. Because you regularly communicate with Captains, representatives, and docking crews, you must have strong interpersonal skills. Qualifications for this career include an understanding of marine operations, the ability to work in varying weather conditions at all hours of the day, and previous experience as a Dockmaster or Assistant in a high-volume (200–230 dockings and undockings per year) environment!

Experience with Tugboats, Barges, Commercial Vessels, Navy & Coast Guard Vessels, Floating Drydocks, Mobile Travelift, and Syncrolift boat lift operations are extremely helpful along with the following personal traits:

  • Organizational skills,
  • The ability to follow procedures (knowing the dock plan),
  • Good physical condition,
  • A hands-on approach and jumping in where needed,
  • A willingness to get the job done, regardless of the hour,
  • A sense of pride and teamwork that you maintain and instill in others, and
  • Excellent communication skills with our clients and with the teams.

The company provides Drydocking and repair services to a large base of commercial and government vessels in the Hampton Roads area. The vessels include: Tugboats, Ferries, Coast Guard Cutters and tenders, Tour Boats, Cruise Ships, Pilot Boats, Yachts, and other marine vessels of all kinds. Our workforce includes skilled welders, painters, machinists, pipefitters, electricians, dockmen, and fabricators. The great variety of vessels drydocked in our yard, makes for challenging and very interesting work. With our leading-edge facilities and some of the best-trained craftspeople available in the shipyard business.

Qualified candidates will need the legal authorization to work for any employer in the US without requiring visa sponsorship. All new hires must provide identification to verify eligibility to work in the US, and must pass a pre-employment medical exam, which includes a drug screening and physical abilities assessment.
