Crewing-Labor Relations (Unions)?

Reports To: Vice President, Human Resources and Labor Relations
Schedule: Monday through Friday business hour and as needed beyond (including weekends when necessary)
Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Experience: Prior experience in Labor Relations or Human Resources; working knowledge of union contracts
Languages: English

  • Experience conducting employee investigations

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Industrial or Labor Relations, or Maritime Academy
Experience: Maritime industry experience; 5 years plus experience in Human Resources
Languages: English and Spanish
Skills/Software: Nautical Systems, Oracle
Licenses/Certifications: PHR and/or SHRM-CP

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Labor Relations Manager will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain effective and collaborative relationships with union representatives
  • Ensure the Company continues to work with Union Hiring Halls to assure timely qualified manpower resource availability to meet ship operations
  • Continually analyze and interpret crewing management agreements, collective bargaining agreements and pay practices
    • Interpret and ensure the application of Union contracts as applied to crewing on Company ships
  • Participate in Union Contract preparation and negotiation
  • Advises, counsels, investigates (when necessary) and assists management and employees on general employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances and helps to determine appropriate disciplinary action or provides recommendations for equitable resolution to reduce legal risk and ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws
    • Respond to all grievances in writing, negotiate settlements and act as the property's representative at all arbitrations
    • Act as the Company lead in grievance and arbitration meetings in accordance with any relevant contracts
    • Supports the grievance and appeals processes within all unions and the relevant contracts
    • Tracks grievances and other relevant union data and generates reports as requested
  • Review union benefit contributions for accuracy and approve workflow (monthly)
  • Provide information and data necessary for contract negotiation and analysis, such as developing wage and benefit survey information
  • Assists with gathering and analyzing information to ensure that employment actions comply with established policies, operating procedures, human resource laws, and the collective bargaining agreement
  • Administers organizational policies and the collective bargaining agreement
  • Analyzes, researches, provides recommendations and develops new policies or updates existing policies on a variety of employment issues in compliance with evolving and current laws and organizational standards
  • Supports the effective operation of the performance management process
  • Continually reviews internal processes to reflect updates, process improvements and legal/regulatory requirements
  • Performs all tasks and job functions in compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Ensure that all necessary personnel and employment records required by the company, employee, government and/or contractor(s) are maintained in good order
  • In coordination with Operations and Crewing team, ensure seagoing training requirements and schedules are met and documented.
  • In coordination with Operations and Crewing team, develop and implement such training programs as appropriate and/or required.
  • Travel to the vessels for visits and investigations and as necessary for business meetings.
  • Perform such other tasks, duties and responsibilities as needed or directed by the VP, HR and Labor Relations

5+ years experience managing marine vessels, including crewing and training for DSV and major offshore construction vessels preferred
Experience with US rules & regulations, STCW, and other flag state requirements
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc) Strong leadership, interpersonal and listening skills.

Good organizational and analytical skills

Experience with crewing software, NS5 preferred
