Dubai: In its first four months of operations, from September to January, the giant new UAE port of Khalifa handled more than a quarter of a million containers, and authorities at Abu Dhabi Ports Company are confident Khalifa will handle 1m teu in calendar 2013.
Khalifa is designed with an initial capacity of 2.5m teu a year, but long term plans could see that rise to 30m.
Meanwhile, Port Zayed, which Khalifa is effectively replacing, is being looked at as a possible site for redevelopment into a cruise hub. [03/04/13]
