Maersk Tankers in for another handy

Maersk Tankers is to add a modern unit to its handy tanker fleet. The Copenhagen-based shipping company declined to comment on the subject, but some brokers report that the modern ice class 1A tanker named Elbtank Italy (37,000 dwt, built 2006) is being sold to Maersk Tankers for some $18.2m.

The seller is Elbtank Italy Schiffahrts, a German KG managed by Tb Marine Hamburg which is no longer owned or participated by Seaarland BV.

Claudio Baccichetti, CEO of Motia di Navigazione and a member of the Zacchello family, told Splash: “The family has no more any connection with this ship”.

The Italian shipowner explained that “Seaarland was effectively partner of Tb Marine Hamburg before the Chapter 11 procedure but the two companies cut off any relation and partnership from 2009 on”.

Maersk Tankers in the current market cycle is showing to be in a buying mood following the order worth $300m for nine 49,940-dwt MR product tankers from Samsung Heavy Industries Ningbo shipyard in China recently reported by Splash.
