Maldives hands out record fine to Vietnamese owner

Hanoi: The Transport Authority in the Maldives has levied a fine of MVR508.6m upon a Vietnamese ship that had run aground near Summer Island Village resort in the Kaafu atoll, instructing them to pay the fine within a period of 30 days. The record fine on the Viet Long bulker was handed out as a result of the vast amount of coral reef damage incurred following the May 31 incident.

The ship sank last week, as salvage efforts failed. A further fine is likely to be levied because of the oil spill that followed the accident. The ship’s crew have not been able to leave the Maldives since the grounding occurred.  [07/07/14]
