MARAD awards $9.8m to small US shipyards

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it has awarded $9.8 million to 18 US shipyards through its Small Shipyard Grant Program.

Beneficiary firms vary in size from small family-run outfits to companies employing hundreds of people.

They range geographically from Alaska and California in the west to Maine and South Carolina in the east and Texas in the south as well as the Great Lakes.

These grants’ purpose is to help modernization work, to increase productivity and to make US firms competitive globally.

Since 2008 the program has handed out $174m to 169 small yards.

MARAD is part of the Department of Transportation and its remit is to promote waterborne transportation in the US.
