MT Maritime orders four new chemical tankers

New York: US-based tanker operator MT Maritime Management has signalled its optimism by ordering four new vessels for its fleet.

Two of the newbuilds are placed with Japan’s Kitanihon Shipbuilding, with the 21,000 dwt chemical tankers due for delivery by January and March 2018.

The other two orders are for 35,650 dwt chemical tankers with Shin Kurushima, also of Japan. Their delivery months are June and October.

Even before this quartet of orders, Southport, Connecticut-based MT Maritime had six stainless steel chemical tankers on order at Shin Kurushima, one of which – the MTM Penang – was delivered in February.

The spate of deals by MT Maritime jibes with market rumours that some shipowners have been tempted to invest in chemical tankers in anticipation of a long-awaited market recovery.
