Navios supramax fixed on period charter as market readjusts

Navios Maritime Holdings has fixed its supramax bulk carrier Navios Mercator on a 12-month period charter to Singapore’s Centurion Bulk.

The ship was fixed at a rate of $5,100 per day, delivering in Luanda. AIS data shows the vessel is already moored at the Angolan port.

The rate is roughly in line with Alibra Shipping’s current timecharter estimates for supramaxes. The London-based broker estimates 12-month charter rates at $5,200 per day for vessels in the Atlantic basin and $4,750 per day for those in the Pacific.

Supramax rates have been enjoying a sustained rally in the spot market. Since February 12, the Baltic Supramax Index has climbed 169 points to reach 412 today. The index’s timecharter average rate has increased by $1,762 over the same period and was today assessed at $4,306 per day.
