New government in Sri Lanka reviews China’s port plans

Beijing: The $1.4bn project led by Chinese company China Communications Construction Co (CCCC) to develop a port city in Colombo is in doubt as the new Sri Lankan government is currently reviewing the project.

Former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who played a key role in giving Chinese companies access to major projects, was replaced by Maithripala Sirisena in an election campaign, during which Sirisena had expressed his concern over the Chinese projects.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the new prime minister of Sri Lanka, said he would cancel the port project and review all major infrastructure projects last month.

“We consider China a good friend; it just happens that many of these projects in question happened to be Chinese,” he said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping launched construction of the project during a brief visit to Sri Lanka in September.

China has been involved in many infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka, including the Colombo South Container Terminal Project and the expansion project of Hambantota port. [12/01/15]
