New managing director for Thoresen Shipping, Claxton moves to coal subsidiary

Andy Hillier has today become managing director of Thoresen Shipping, the dry bulk shipping arm of Bangkok-listed Thoresen Thai Agencies.

Ian Claxton, the company’s former MD, today told Splash he has stepped in as CEO of Unique Mining Services Public Company, a publically listed subsidiary of Thoresen Thai Agencies that specialises in coal transport and logistics. He has been CEO of the coal entity for “a month or so”.

Hillier’s career in shipping has spanned 22 years, and he was most recently managing director of Eastern Bulk Carriers Oslo.

The new MD will focus on the strategic and commercial development of Thoresen & Co. (Bangkok) and Thoresen Shipping Singapore and will oversee its fleet renewal, the company said.

“We warmly welcome the appointment of Mr. Hillier, who brings with him strong track record and relevant industry experience, to lead our shipping team successfully facing the challenges of the current market,” said Sigmund Stromme, Thoresen Thai Agencies’ executive vice-president for shipping and logistics, to whom Hillier will report.

Thoresen Shipping operates a “modern” fleet of 23 owned handymax and supramax bulk carriers from its base in Thailand.
