Nexans signs record $1.87bn offshore wind contract

Paris-based cabling firm Nexans has sealed a frame agreement with Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT for three grid projects, connecting the future offshore wind farms BalWin 3, LanWin 4, LanWin 2, in the German North Sea to the mainland.

The company said the largest contract in its history is worth €1.7bn ($1.87bn), with major subcontracted works to be added once the project-specific call-offs are signed. Nexans will be responsible for the full engineering, procurement, construction and installation, including civil works, of over 2,160 km of subsea and land cables.

The awarded projects are the first in which Nexans is deploying its 525 kV offshore cable technology, specifically designed to support the energy transition. The subsea cables will be manufactured at the company’s flagship factory in Halden, Norway.

Last May, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium agreed to jointly install at least 65 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030. TenneT will account for almost two-thirds of this, with 20 GW each in the German and Dutch North Seas.

Earlier in March, cabling contractors NKT of Denmark and Italy’s Prysmian emerged as winners of a large tender to provide cable connections for five of TenneT’s 2GW projects, to be completed between 2028 and 2030. NKT’s portion of the award is worth around €2bn, while Prysmian will be banking approximately €1.8m.

NKT on Friday also announced a similar frame deal with Tennet worth €1.5bn for three offshore wind farms in the Dutch part of the North Sea.
