Kuala Lumpur: Northport expects construction of its revamped giant eighth berth to start at the end of this year. The tendering process is already underway for the facility which will be able to accommodate the largest boxships afloat. The construction will add 300,000 teu in additional annual capacity at the Malaysian port.
Northport handled 2.88m teu last year, down by 3% from 3.09m teu handled in 2012.
The head of Northport has called for greater government aid in helping the port and its neighbour at Port Klang, Westports, to grow. The port is pushing for a single window system for customs clearance. [24/06/14]
