Oil smugglers apprehended

Jakarta: Customs officers in Batam have broken up an attempt to smuggle 1,300 tons of crude oil carried by a ship headed to Malaysia, following an hour-long pursuit, during which officers fired warning shots.

“We were informed that this ship [called the Kyosei Maru] was hoarding crude oil while en route to Malaysia. We will find out more regarding how many boats were involved in this operation,” Batam customs officer Emi Luwidanto said yesterday.

The ship’s captain, Yohanes Tumbelakas, and 10 crew members, were arrested. The crew had unleashed five dogs to try and stop the customs officials boarding the ship.  [04/12/14]
