Online poll stirs debate

Singapore: The latest quarterly online poll for our sister title, Maritime CEO, has garnered more than 300 votes with just under a month to go before voting ends. Around 58% of respondents said there was no need for the Nicaragua Canal, one of six topical questions raised in the vote.

Arguments for and against the canal were carried in the comments section that follows each question.

One respondent noted: “First, it will break the Panama Canal monopoly. Second, it will rationalize the transit costs. Third, Nicaragua canal will not be hindered by locks to climb up the mountain and then down again, therefore, will have a higher scalability. Fourth, it will vitalize the impowerished Nicaraguan economy.”

Another voter clearly not in favour of the massive new infrastructure wrote: There will be those that suggest a new canal will bring competition to the market place; but this often leads to a "race to the bottom" and I believe we would see both canals suffer maintenance deficiencies that could ultimately lead to two ineffective canals.”

The regular online poll also looks at the markets, the issue of unmanned ships, and internet connectivity at sea.

The poll takes just two minutes to fill in and there is no registration. You can access it here.  [17/10/14]
