Opponents lash out at latest truck ban

Manila: News of another truck ban in the heart of Manila has been greeted with anger. A group of retailers yesterday joined trucker associations in opposing the six-month truck ban on a key throughfare, Roxas Boulevard, imposed by the Metro Manila Development Authority starting Wednesday.

The opponents of the ban say it will lead to higher prices of basic commodities and needlessly add to the port congestion in the Philippine capital, something that has been a near constant all year following the February introduction of a more widespread and controversial trucking ban by former president, now mayor of Manila, Joseph Estrada.

The 7.6 km Roxas Boulevard hugs the coastline along Manila linking to terminals and is deemed one of the most important roads in the city.  [04/12/14]
