Philippines cooks up rice exports
Manila: Rice producers and traders in the Philippines will export rice in May. It marks the first serious export of the foodstuff from the archipelago for 40 years.
A total of 65 tons of varied types of rice from across the country will be shipped to Dubai and Indonesia in the next week.
Pouring caution on the news, V. Subramanian, vp, Asia at The Rice Trader, told SeaShip News: “It does makes the Philippines an exporter, but mostly high grade rice for Filipino expats around the world. It is unlikely they will be a net rice exporter in the near term – say 5 years.” [30/04/13]
