Port Canaveral given green light for multipurpose cargo berth

Port Canaveral in Florida has got the go ahead for a multipurpose cargo berth.

Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favour of progressing with the North Cargo Berth 8 project.

It is needed, say advocates, to accommodate a growing cargo load that includes commercial spacecraft components.

Presently the port handles 5.5 million tons of cargo annually.

Work will include a 900-foot seawall and a 100-foot extension of the pier.

A Florida-based firm, Orion Marine Group of Tampa, has a $17.9 million contract for the project with a start planned for March 2018 and scheduled completion for mid-2019.
