Port Klang to dredge south channel entrance

Kuala Lumpur: Port Klang Authority (PKA) is going to deepen the south channel entrance at Pintu Gedong in Port Klang from its current depth of 16.5m to 18.0m in order to cater to larger ships.

According to Captain Datuk David Padman, general manager of PKA, the dredging project is to cater for the ultra large container ships with capacity of more than 18,000teu, and the project will be undertaken by Integrated Marine Works and is expected to be completed by April 2015.

"With more shipping lines opting for vessels with larger carrying capacity on the basis of economies of scale, ports are tasked with ensuring that adequate infrastructure is available so as not to be left out when lines opt for their ports of call,” Padman said. [28/04/14]
