Precious Shipping bulker runs aground off Norfolk, Virginia

A bulk carrier owned by Thailand’s Precious Shipping ran aground off Sewell’s Point in Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday.

The 2008-built Mallika Naree was carrying a cargo of concrete and steel when it encountered difficulties, losing propulsion in the Elizabeth River and striking a buoy before running soft aground outside the shipping channel.

Tugboats arrived and manoeuvred the Mallika Naree to an anchorage in the Elizabeth River where it was being monitored by the US Coast Guard (USCG) and local agencies.

No fuel leakage, vessel breach or crew injury was reported.

Before the incident, the ship had been en route from France to Norfolk.
