Reef damage feared as bulker grounds off the Solomon Islands

Reef damage is expected when authorities in the Solomon Islands finally get to survey the area where a bulker ran aground nine days ago. The Hong Kong-flagged Solomon Trader ran aground in Kangava Bay off Rennell Island while loading bauxite in inclement conditions.

Bad weather over the past week linked to a cyclone that hit Vanuatu has prevented the local government from heading out to the ship to assess the damage. A break in the weather is forecast tomorrow. No oil pollution has been spotted.
