Regulator approves Pemex request to drill two deepwater wells in Gulf of Mexico

Mexico’s state oil firm Pemex on Tuesday was granted permission to drill two offshore wells in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Reuters.

Approval was given by the country’s regulator, the National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH), for Pemex to proceed with drilling the Vasto-1001 and Nobilis-1 wells off of northeastern Tamaulipas state. Drilling can begin later this year.

They are part of the Perdido Fold Belt, which is a petroleum exploration province in the northwestern sector of the Gulf. It’s near to the maritime border with the US.

Both wells are deep water, with Vasto-1001 at a depth of 23,717 feet and Nobilis-1 at 19,619 feet.

Pemex is struggling after many years of posting losses and is in the process of relinquishing its previous monopoly position in the nation’s oil and gas industries as the government tries to reform the energy sector.
