Relief as Jurong Shipyard workers leave hospital

Singapore: There is a keen sense of relief in Singapore with official news that out of the 89 workers injured at Jurong Shipyard on Monday, just six remain in hospital, with Tan Chuan-Jin, acting minister for the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), saying that those still being checked by doctors are not in serious condition and will be discharged soon.

A ministry statement said the stop-work order remains at the yard run by SembCorp Marine until it is assured that the site is safe for workers to go back to work. This order could be in place “for some time” sources at the ministry said.

A failed braking system on one of the moveable legs of a jack up rig had caused the structure, Noble Regina Allen, to tilt, initial investigations show.  [05/12/12]
