SCI looks at Myanmar calls

Mumbai: Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is looking to start a container route to Myanmar this month if New Delhi is willing to fork out around $5m a year to help run this loss-making route.

Currently, India-Myanmar trade is conducted on a tramp basis, but SCI plans to put in a regular fixed timetable service with a 1,500 teu ship calling Yangon, Chennai and Colombo twice a month.

India is keen to boost trade with its neighbour, Myanmar, as it jostles with China for primacy with the fast opening Southeast Asian nation.  [05/02/14]
