Seattle hands out indictments over discharging of wastewater

Two overseas firms and two personnel are facing indictments in a US court in the case of a vessel that allegedly discharged oily wastewater on several days in October last year.

The bulker Gallia Graeca, travelling from China to Seattle, had a faulty oily water separator which led to a buildup of oily water.

According to the indictment, by a Seattle, Washington grand jury, safety equipment was bypassed to enable the illegal discharge of at least 5,000 gallons of polluted water.

Two of the ship’s engineers allegedly falsified the record books and lied to US Coast Guard (USCG) inspectors about them.

The grand jury has indicted the ship’s operator company Angelakos of Panama, owner Gallia Graeca Shipping of Cyprus and the two engineers.

The charges carry potential maximum jail terms of 20 years and fines of $500,000.
