Singapore: A Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) seminar held last Friday with shipowners from Singapore showed that despite the changing regulatory environment, most fuels will still be usable if owners know what to expect and how to handle them.
Charlotte Rojgaard, global technical director at VPS, which used to be part of DNV, also discussed trends in marine fuel supply, noting that oil refineries are becoming less involved in the production and supply of finished marine fuels with oil traders taking their place.
“Oil traders blend finished fuels in the most cost efficient way,” she said, explaining they go right up to as many specification limits as possible.
“Very few traders can tell you with confidence what a fuel actually contains in terms of components,” she warned. [18/08/14]
