Norwegian offshore oil and gas services company 4Subsea has been chosen by Shell Brazil to work on a research project with a Rio university engineering department on extending the safe operational life of flexible risers.
Shell is contracting with 4Subsea for around $3.1 million on the three-year research project, which will be done in conjunction with Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) centre for engineering research and education (COPPE).
4Subsea is tasked with delivering digital solutions for monitoring riser integrity and developing new ways to extend the lifespan of risers.
Flexible risers are flexible pipes that transfer materials from the seafloor to the drilling and production facilities and in the opposite direction, too.
