Shipping and climate change survey: Is it all about the money?

An avid Splash reader, Therese Canning, has been in touch asking readers to help her out by taking a survey for her master’s degree she’s taking at the University of Exeter in the UK.

Sea trading has been going on for thousands of years, before most countries were even thought of. It has become such an essential part of our modern world that most people don’t ever consider where or how the things they use every day come from.

The range of new technologies available, and a greater understanding by the public of climate change, may enable people within the shipping sector to make decisions that will lead to carbon emissions reduction.

My survey is in two parts, the first deals with available technology, the second part deals with those intangible factors which affect decision-making.

The main object of my research project is to explore the potential for low-carbon shipping to transform the sea-freight industry as part of a transition model of essential change required to protect the environment from climate change. Specifically, to reduce sea freight emissions to 50% of 2012 levels by 2050.

If you would like to discuss any of the questions in more detail, please contact me at tc417@exeter.ac.uk.

Feel free to share this survey with your colleagues using this link.

Results of the survey will be carried on Splash next month.
