Simply Blue venture floats 2 GW Iberian wind scheme

IberBlue Wind consortium has revealed plans for two floating offshore wind farms off the Atlantic coasts of Portugal and Spain with a total capacity of nearly 2 GW.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano and Creoula floating projects are located off the coasts of Pontevedra and Viana do Castelo and will have approximately 109 turbines and cover an area of 530 sq km. The larger, Creoula project will have 80 turbines of 18 MW each and an installed capacity of 1,440 MW.

The investment for the construction and maintenance of the two projects has been projected to be more than €4bn ($4.36bn). It is also estimated that the cost of the joint development could be 32% lower than if they were to be developed separately.

IberBlue Wind is a joint venture developing offshore floating wind farm projects for the Iberian market. The partners are Ireland-based Simply Blue Group, and Spanish companies Proes Consultores, the engineering division of Grupo Amper, and FF New Energy Ventures (FF NEV), a developer of renewable projects.
