Singapore runs Shanghai close for boxport supremacy

Singapore: A strong finish to the year cemented Shanghai’s position as the world’s busiest port for the fourth consecutive year, although Singapore ran it close for much of 2013.

Official data showed Shanghai handled 33.6m teu last year, a growth of 3.3%, giving it at least a window of around 1m teu from Singapore, it’s nearest competitor which has yet to reveal its full year figures.

Singapore has unveiled plans to shift its whole port operations to the west of the republic to Tuas in a move that will ultimately double container capacity in the Lion City. [06/01/14]
