South African firefighters tackle APL boxship inferno

Tugs and firefighters were deployed this morning to Algoa Bay in South Africa where a number of boxes on the 6,350 teu APL Austria had caught fire, leading to the majority of the ship’s crew to evacuate.

The APL Austria is operated by APL and is owned by Japan’s Shoei Kisen Kaisha.

The fire was reported as it came into anchorage. After three hours of hosing down the midship area of the vessel, the decision was taken to move it into port where firefighting continues at Port Elizabeth. No reason for the fire has yet been given.
