Steps being taken to improve ICTT Vallarpadam’s connectivity

Cochin: The Cochin Port Trust (ChPT) has launched construction work on a flyover and a rail over bridge at Vallarpadam to improve the connectivity of the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) and ease traffic congestion on the road leading to the DP World operated facility.

Currently, a massive bottleneck has been created due to the mixing of local traffic to and from Puthuvypeen with the multi-axle container movement to and from the ICTT and container freight stations. Hardship is also being faced by the general public due to the level crossing at the GIDA Bridge no. 2 for rail movement to the terminal.

The construction activities are to be carried out on the existing Goshree Road, a portion of National Highway 47C, and on the road between GIDA bridges nos. 2 and 3, without hindering vehicular traffic.

The ChPT project is expected to cost INR620m ($10m), and will be completed by May 2016.
