Stranded crew set for repatriation

Dubai: A long-running tragic saga that has seen 16 crewmembers stranded off Dubai is close to ending, according to the vessel’s owner.

The 16 crewmembers of the Maharshi Devatreya cargo ship will return home soon, said Yudhishthir Khatau, chairman of Varun Shipping. The ship is expected to enter the Dubai World Drydocks in mid-July.

The crew have been trapped on the ship anchored in Rashid Port’s anchorage for almost a year.

The crew members are not able to land in Dubai because they have no visas and cannot go home because the ship’s licences have expired.

“The crew will be relieved on the vessel entering the drydock around mid-July 2014,” Khatau said.  [26/06/14]
