Strike brings Beirut port to a standstill

Cairo: A strike by truckers today has brought the Port of Beirut to a standstill. Truck drivers are concerned that the government’s plans to develop the port into a transhipment hub will actually cut the amount of work they will have.

The truckers said the strike was open-ended, and will last until the government holds dialogue with the drivers.

Plans to make the port into a transhipment hub call for the filling in of the port’s deepest terminal to make it into a container storage area. Protestors say the reclamation will result in larger ships avoiding the port.  [02/02/15]
