Suez Canal protest turns ugly, shots fired

Cairo: Canal workers are continuing their sit-in in front of the Suez Canal Authority building for the twelfth day in a row, demanding better working conditions.

Some protesters tried yesterday to stop the car of Mohab Mamish, the authority’s chairman. Security forces intervened and opened fire in the air to keep them away from the car. Mamish opened his car window telling the protesters: “I promise you that the problem will be solved today and what is coming in the near future is good for you”.

One of protesters said that he was beaten by the military armed forces, when they broke up the protest.

The protestors have a number of tents in front of the canal hq and confirmed that they are continuing their sit-in until all their demands are met.  [12/06/13]
